Patent Application for Real-Time Transfer Instruction Processing
Summary
The USPTO has published a patent application (US20260087497A1) filed by The Toronto-Dominion Bank for a computer-implemented method to process real-time transfer instructions. The method involves checking resource availability before authorizing transfers, potentially enabling early access to earned wages.
What changed
This document is a published patent application (US20260087497A1) for a system and method related to processing real-time transfer instructions, filed by The Toronto-Dominion Bank. The invention describes a computer-implemented process where a system queries an external resource system (such as a payroll or earned wage access system) to verify resource availability before authorizing a transfer instruction. This ensures that a resource threshold event in a user account is avoided, and it may facilitate early access to earned wages.
While this is a patent application and not a regulation, it signals potential future technological developments in financial services, particularly in payment processing and earned wage access. Compliance officers in financial institutions, especially those involved in payroll and employee benefits, should be aware of such innovations as they may influence future product offerings, operational processes, and the regulatory landscape surrounding early wage access and real-time payments. No immediate compliance actions are required, but monitoring patent filings in this area can provide insight into emerging industry trends.

Abstract
A computer-implemented method is disclosed. The method includes receiving, from a remote system, a transfer instruction regarding a user account that, if implemented, would result in a resource threshold event in the user account. The system hosting the user account then sends a query message to an external resource system regarding a resource account associated with the user account and receives a response indicating the resource availability level of the resource account. If the resource availability level is sufficient to avoid the resource threshold event, then the system causes the external resource system to re-allocate a quantity of resource from the resource account to the user account and it authorizes and implements the transfer instruction. The external resource system may be a payroll system or an earned wages access system, in some cases, for obtaining early access to earned wages prior to payroll processing.
