Greece Travel Surplus €284.8M, Receipts Up 83%

The Bank of Greece reported that the balance of travel services posted a surplus of €284.8 million in February 2026, up from €89.0 million in February 2025. Travel receipts rose by 83.2% year-on-year to €533.4 million, driven by a 44.5% increase in inbound traveller flows and a 28.7% rise in average expenditure per trip. Inbound travellers totalled 1,034.6 thousand in February 2026, with particularly strong growth from EU27 countries (up 53.8%) and other countries (up 35.0%).

Greece February 2026 Balance of Payments: Services Surplus Rises, Travel Receipts Jump 83%

The Bank of Greece released February 2026 balance of payments data showing the services balance surplus improved modestly, driven by a 83.2% year-on-year surge in travel receipts and 44.5% increase in non-resident arrivals. The primary income account deficit nearly doubled year-on-year, while the capital account recorded a deficit of EUR 106.8 million. Greece's reserve assets stood at EUR 23.0 billion at end-February 2026, compared with EUR 15.7 billion at end-February 2025.

Proposal to Reappoint Yannis Stournaras as Governor

The General Council of the Bank of Greece voted unanimously on April 20, 2026, to propose the reappointment of Governor Yannis Stournaras to the Council of Ministers, pursuant to Article 29 of the Bank's Statute. The proposal comes in view of Stournaras's current term ending on June 26, 2026. This is a procedural step requiring ministerial approval before the reappointment takes effect.
