Summary

The NTSB will hold a public meeting on March 31, 2026, to determine the probable causes of two fatal crashes involving Ford's BlueCruise hands-free system. The investigations cover incidents in San Antonio and Philadelphia where Ford SUVs struck stationary vehicles at highway speeds.

What changed

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has announced a public board meeting scheduled for March 31, 2026, to determine the probable causes of two fatal rear-end collisions involving 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs operating with the BlueCruise partial automation system. These investigations, docketed as HWY24FH006 (San Antonio) and HWY24FH008 (Philadelphia), examine incidents where the vehicles struck stationary vehicles at highway speeds, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The meeting will address safety issues and vote on safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar future accidents.

While this is a notice of a meeting and not a final rule or enforcement action, the NTSB's findings and recommendations could lead to significant changes in the design, regulation, and operation of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like BlueCruise. Manufacturers of vehicles equipped with such systems, particularly those with hands-free capabilities, should closely monitor the NTSB's findings and potential safety recommendations. Compliance officers should be prepared to assess the implications for their organizations, especially if their products utilize similar technology, as the NTSB's conclusions often influence future regulatory actions by agencies like NHTSA.

What to do next

  1. Monitor NTSB public meeting on March 31, 2026, for findings on BlueCruise crashes.
  2. Review NTSB dockets HWY24FH006 and HWY24FH008 for detailed investigative materials.
  3. Assess potential implications of NTSB safety recommendations for vehicle ADAS technology.

Fatal Crashes Involving Ford’s Hands-Free BlueCruise Partial Automation System Subject of March 31 NTSB Board Meeting

3/11/2026

WASHINGTON (March. 11, 2026) -- The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public board meeting March 31 to determine the probable causes of two separate crashes involving 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUVs operating in the company’s hands-free, partial automation system, BlueCruise.

The meeting will cover NTSB investigations into the fatal 2024 rear-end crashes in which the Ford SUVs struck stationary vehicles at highway speeds in San Antonio and Philadelphia. In the San Antonio crash, a Ford traveling east in the center lane of Interstate 10 struck a stationary 1999 Honda CR-V. The Honda driver was killed, and the Ford driver sustained minor injuries. In the Philadelphia crash, a Ford traveling north in the left lane of Interstate 95 struck two stationary vehicles—a 2012 Hyundai Elantra and a 2006 Toyota Prius—causing them to collide with a passing Toyota Corolla. The drivers of the Prius and Elantra were killed. The Ford driver sustained minor injuries, and the Corolla driver was uninjured. In both crashes, no driver-applied or system-initiated braking or steering was recorded in the moments before impact.

During the meeting, NTSB board members will discuss safety issues related to these crashes and vote on the probable causes and safety recommendations designed to prevent similar crashes in the future.
