Summary

Germany's Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) announced that the EU-wide Entry-Exit System (EES) for electronic recording of third-country nationals entering the Schengen area will be fully operational at German airports beginning 1 April 2026. The system, rolled out since 12 October 2025, replaces traditional passport stamps with digital biometric registration (fingerprints and facial images). Travelers are advised to expect potential wait times during peak travel periods and to plan additional time for border control procedures.

What changed

The LBA published an informational notice advising that the EU Entry-Exit System (EES) will reach full operational status at German airports on 1 April 2026. The system, deployed in phases since October 2025, electronically registers third-country nationals at Schengen border crossings, collecting biometric data (fingerprints and facial images) and storing personal information in place of physical passport stamps.

Third-country nationals traveling to the Schengen area should anticipate potential processing delays, particularly during periods of high travel volume. Airport operators and airlines should ensure that check-in and boarding processes account for the additional time required for biometric border procedures under the EES framework.

Neues Entry-Exit-System (EES):

Wartezeit an deutschen Flughäfen möglich

Datum 01.04.2026
