Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration is awarding grants up to $400,000 per recipient through the Veterans Legacy Grants Program. These grants aim to provide tools for the public to learn about the histories of Veterans interred in national and state cemeteries.

What changed

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) has announced the Veterans Legacy Grants Program (VLGP) for Fiscal Year 2026, offering grants up to $400,000 per recipient. The program seeks to fund projects that enable the public to learn about the histories of Veterans interred in national, state, territorial, and Tribal Veterans cemeteries, with a special interest in those with significant local community connections. Eligible applicants include state governments, private and public institutions of higher education, independent school districts, and non-profit entities with 501(c)(3) status and demonstrated community engagement history.

Eligible entities must submit applications by March 27, 2026, at 5:00 pm Eastern Time. The total program funding is $2,200,000, with an expected 10 awards. Recipients will be responsible for developing tools and resources to highlight veteran histories. While this is a grant opportunity and not a regulatory mandate, entities seeking funding should carefully review the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) and adhere to all application requirements and deadlines to be considered for awards.

What to do next

  1. Review the FY 2026 VLGP NOFO for detailed eligibility and application requirements.
  2. Prepare and submit grant applications by the March 27, 2026 deadline.
  3. Ensure proposed projects align with the program's goal of highlighting veteran histories and community connections.

Description

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) is awarding grants up to a maximum of $400,000 per recipient through the Veterans Legacy Grants Program (VLGP). Grant recipients would provide tools for the public to learn about the histories of Veterans interred in national cemeteries and state, territorial, and Tribal Veterans cemeteries. There is special interest in highlighting the histories of Veterans who have significant connections to their local communities. These grants support the President’s priority to recognize that our nation’s security, prosperity, and freedom would not be possible without our Veterans and, as demonstrated in Executive Order 14296 - Keeping Promises to Veterans and Establishing a National Center for Warrior Independence, that each veteran deserves our gratitude. These legacy grants ensure that Veterans are remembered for their sacrifices.
