NHS Northamptonshire Integrated Care Board (NICB) invited tenders from suitably qualified and experienced providers for a Community Eye Care Services in Northamptonshire to deliver a high quality, integrated safe and patient centred eye screening service utilising the available optometric skills within the community. The service will include:
Postoperative Cataract Follow ups
• A post-operative assessment following cataract surgery to be performed by optometrists in optical practices for those people who have uncomplicated surgery and no significant comorbidities specifically requiring a hospital post-operative assessment (i.e. most patients).
• The outcome and dataset required to complete the NOD cataract audit is reported to the surgical provider, as recommended by NICE NG77 and GIRFT.
• Patients with low-risk post-operative issues to be managed by their optometrist
Hydroxychloroquine Screening
• Annual screening of all Northamptonshire patients prescribed Hydroxychloroquine or Chloroquine and at risk of retinopathy.
• Where appropriate, onward referral to HES including all diagnostic findings.
Stable Glaucoma Monitoring
• Annual monitoring of a fixed cohort of patients diagnosed by the HES as low risk of contracting Glaucoma.
• Where appropriate, onward referral to HES including all diagnostic findings.
This notice is to communicate the intention to award a contract under the Provider Selection Regime (PSR) Competitive Process.
This contract relates to a new service with the intention to award being made to a new provider.
The contract will commence from 01st August 2026 for 3 years with the Commissioner having the option to extend the Contract for up to a further 2 years.
The approximate lifetime value of the contract is expected to be £3,217,720.50

This is a Provider Selection Regime (PSR) intention to award notice. The awarding of this contract is subject to the Health Care Services (Provider Selection Regime) Regulations 2023. For the avoidance of doubt, the provisions of the Procurement Act Regulations 2023 do not apply to this award. The standstill period begins on the day after the publication of this notice. Representations by providers must be made to the relevant authority by 29th April 2026. This contract has not yet formally been awarded; this notice serves as an intention to award a contract under the competitive process of the PSR.
