Summary

Kier Infrastructure published a contract notice on the UK Government's Contracts Finder portal seeking suppliers for archaeological trenching and geophysical survey services. The programme comprises 2,500-3,000 trenches (50m x 1.8m wide x 0.5-1m deep) plus 10 x 20m and 50-100 x 30m bespoke trenches, with an archaeological watching brief. The contract value is £5,000,000 to £10,000,000 with a closing date of 20 April 2026 at 5pm.

What changed

Kier Infrastructure has published a restricted procedure (above threshold) contract notice for archaeological services to support infrastructure design and Environmental Impact Assessment requirements. The scope includes trial trenching (2,500-3,000 standard 50m trenches plus bespoke 20m and 30m trenches) and an archaeological watching brief. The contract runs from 2 June 2026 to 31 May 2027. Suppliers interested in this procurement opportunity must submit applications through the prescribed process before the 20 April 2026 closing deadline. The contract is suitable for SMEs but not VCSEs.

Archaeological firms and construction companies should evaluate whether they have the capacity and qualified subcontractors to deliver the specified trenching and monitoring scope within the contract timeline. The restricted procedure means suppliers will be selected at the first stage before being invited to submit full bids at the second stage.

Description

Kier Infrastructure is seeking to establish a dedicated supply chain to deliver a programme of both non intrusive and intrusive surveys in support of the design development and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) requirements for one of our contracts.

The trial trenching evaluation scope is currently being developed and will comprise between 2500 and 3000 50m long x 1.8m wide x 0.5m-1m deep trenches. A standard size of trenching has been selected to better target, evaluate and characterise possible or probable archaeological features, avoid constraints and ensure appropriate coverage. Bespoke trench lengths have been placed for certain features and to avoid constraint; the scope of these trenches comprises approximately 10 20m trenches and between 50 and 100 30m trenches.

The Scope will also include an Archaeological watching brief. The archaeological monitoring will be carried out by a suitably qualified Subcontract, with any exposed archaeological remains excavated and recorded. The archaeological investigations will also be carried out in accordance with the relevant guidance.

Note there is no additional scope information at this time.
