What changed

The NSF published a new funding opportunity for the Intelligent Interactive Dynamic Systems (IIDS) program. The program seeks proposals for fundamental research advancing the science and engineering of intelligent dynamic systems, including systems that interact with and adapt to people. Research areas of interest include novel dynamic phenomena, new methods for modeling, simulation, analysis, inference, and control, as well as models of human perception, action, cognition, behavior, and social responses.

Academic institutions and research organizations may consider submitting proposals for research aligned with the program's focus on dynamic systems, intelligent systems interacting with people, and transformative theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches. The program is administered by NSF ENG/CMMI with funding managed through standard NSF award processes.

Synopsis

Supports fundamental research to advance the science and engineering of intelligent dynamic systems, including engineered systems that interact with people.

The world around us, from living organisms and natural environments to machines and structures, can be described using the language of dynamic systems. Dynamic systems are networks of interconnected components whose behavior changes in time. Research on dynamic systems seeks to understand how their behavior can be predicted and influenced when important aspects of the system are hidden or unpredictable. IIDS invests in fundamental research that impacts national priorities in the context of dynamic systems and improves quality of life.

The IIDS program supports transformative ideas that advance the science and engineering of intelligent dynamic systems to ensure functionality, safety, reliability, and resilience. Intelligence includes a broad class of methods to solve problems or make decisions. IIDS projects may investigate novel dynamic phenomena and new methods for modeling, simulation, analysis, inference, and control. IIDS also supports the study of engineered systems that interact with and adapt to people. Models of human perception, action, cognition, behavior, and social responses may be created for use in engineered systems. The program supports research that creates innovative theoretical, computational, and/or experimental approaches. The program encourages novel strategies inspired by other disciplines and paradigms for transformative results that are grounded in theory.

Partnerships: To speed discovery and innovation, NSF partners with federal agencies, industry, international groups, and others. Current opportunities are at NSF ENG Partnerships.

This program advances NSF’s mission as given in the NSF organic statute (42 U.S.C. 1861, et seq.).
