Annual NIA Call for Lifespan Extension Compounds in Caenorhabditis
Summary
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) Caenorhabditis Interventions Testing Program (CITP) has released its annual solicitation for compounds to be tested for lifespan extension in calendar years 2026-2027. Proposals must be submitted by June 1, 2026, following the CITP's published intervention nomination guidelines. The CITP comprises three screening centers at Rutgers, the University of Oregon, and the Buck Institute, and a data coordinating center at the University of Oregon.

What changed
The NIA CITP has issued its annual call for compounds to be evaluated for lifespan extension and delay of age-related functional decline using genetically diverse Caenorhabditis strains. This solicitation invites sponsors to nominate compounds, provide dosing and route recommendations, and propose assays to measure efficacy. Proposals will be reviewed by an Access Panel and prioritized by the CITP Steering Committee.
Pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and academic researchers in aging and longevity research may nominate compounds for testing in the 2026-2027 study cycle. Sponsors receive co-authorship on resulting publications and full access to study data. The June 1, 2026 deadline is firm, and incomplete nominations may not be considered for the upcoming cycle.
What to do next
- Submit compound nomination proposals by June 1, 2026
- Complete application forms per the CITP Intervention Nomination Guide
- Email completed application forms to CITP

Purpose
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) Caenorhabditis Interventions Testing Program (CITP) was established to test compounds with the potential to extend lifespan and/or delay the onset of functional and physiological decline. The NIA CITP aims to identify pharmacological interventions that may moderate/alleviate health decline associated with aging in a robust manner using a genetically diverse set of Caenorhabditis strains. The CITP is comprised of four major components: three screening centers and a data coordinating center. The principal investigators at the three screening centers are (1) Monica Driscoll – Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; (2) Patrick Phillips - University of Oregon; (3) Gordon Lithgow – Buck Institute. The data coordinating center is also headed by Patrick Phillips at the University of Oregon.
The CITP establishes collaborative efforts between the study sites and the sponsors who nominate interventions to introduce in the study pipeline. The sponsors role is to provide the rationale for investigating the intervention(s), to make recommendations on the dose and route for administration, and to propose assays and measurements to document the efficacy of the intervention(s). The sponsor will have access to all data developed from the study, may assist in the analysis of the data, and will be offered co-authorship on resulting publications. Sponsors proposals for novel interventions are reviewed by an Access Panel and prioritized by the CITP Steering Committee. All results of these studies will be published, and the data will be made publicly available. Any delays to publication will be reviewed by the CITP Steering Committee, whose decision will be final.
The NIA CITP is soliciting proposals for compounds to enter the study in calendar years 2026-2027. This is not a Notice of Funding Opportunity, but rather a solicitation of suggestions for compounds to be tested in the CITP. The deadline for receipt of proposals is June 1st, 2026. Information on the NIA CITP and guidelines for proposal development are posted at this website and the CITP website. Completed application forms should be submitted by email to CITP at [email protected].
