Summary
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has updated its guidance on Afghanistan sanctions. The latest update includes a sanctions notice dated March 11, 2026, detailing additions, delistings, revocations, variations, and corrections to the UK Sanctions List concerning Afghanistan.
What changed
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has updated its guidance on Afghanistan sanctions, specifically detailing changes to the UK Sanctions List. The latest update includes a sanctions notice from March 11, 2026, which outlines new designations, revocations, delistings, variations, and corrections to the list. These changes are made under the Afghanistan (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020, aligning with UN sanctions and aimed at freezing assets of individuals and entities threatening Afghanistan's peace and security.
Regulated entities, particularly those involved in financial transactions or trade with Afghanistan, must review the updated sanctions notice and the UK Sanctions List to ensure compliance. This involves verifying if any individuals or entities they engage with are now designated, delisted, or have had their designations varied. Failure to comply with sanctions regulations can result in severe penalties, including asset freezes and potential criminal prosecution.
What to do next
- Review the Sanctions Notice dated 11 March 2026 for Afghanistan.
- Check the UK Sanctions List for any new designations, delistings, or variations affecting current or potential business relationships.
- Ensure internal compliance procedures reflect any changes to sanctioned individuals or entities.
Penalties
Asset freezes and potential criminal prosecution for non-compliance.
