Summary

The Department of Energy's Office of Science is seeking applications for its FY2026 research opportunities in accelerator stewardship and development. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aims to advance accelerator science and technology and support domestic supplier development, with a total program funding of $15,000,000.

What changed

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, through its High Energy Physics program, has released a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for FY2026, inviting applications for cross-cutting research and development (R&D) in accelerator science and technology (AS&T) and domestic supplier development. The funding opportunity, DE-FOA-0003620, has a total program funding of $15,000,000, with individual award maximums of $3,000,000 and minimums of $50,000. Specific tracks have varying eligibility criteria, with Track 1 open to all domestic organizations, Track 2 limited to current PIs for a terminal renewal, and Track 4b restricted to domestic for-profit organizations for supplier development.

Eligible domestic organizations, including manufacturers and technology companies, are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is May 21, 2026. Applicants should review the specific eligibility requirements for each track carefully, as Tracks 3 and 4a are no longer accepting applications. This opportunity is designed to foster advancements in accelerator technology and build domestic supply chain capabilities for the DOE and commercial sectors. There is no cost-sharing or matching requirement. Failure to submit applications by the deadline will preclude consideration for funding.

What to do next

  1. Review eligibility criteria for Tracks 1, 2, and 4b.
  2. Prepare and submit applications for eligible accelerator stewardship and development projects by May 21, 2026.
  3. For Track 2 applicants, ensure applications align with the transition to a multi-PI/multi-institution funding model.

Description

The DOE SC program in High Energy Physics (HEP) hereby announces its interest in applications to conduct cross-cutting use-inspired basic research and development (R&D) to advance accelerator science and technology (AS&T) and domestic supplier development that supports SC’s activities in physical sciences research and which is of broader benefit to other U.S. government agencies and industry. Please note that this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is for cross-cutting R&D and domestic supplier development and that program-specific AS&T R&D is supported though NOFOs issued by each SC program.

Additional information

Track 1: Accelerator Stewardship Topical Areas

Applications for activities in Track 1: Accelerator Stewardship Topical Areas will be accepted from all responsible domestic organizations capable of meeting the objectives of this NOFO.

Track 2: Collaborative Accelerator Research Teams (CARTs) for Long-Term Generic Accelerator Research

Applications for terminal renewal awards under Track 2: Collaborative Accelerator Research Teams (CARTs) for Long-Term Generic Accelerator Research are restricted to Track 2 PIs organizations with a current award that ends before September 30, 2026. Eligibility is limited in Track 2 to current PIs at organizations with awards expiring within FY 2026 while Track 2 changes from a single-PI/single-institution funding model to a multi-PI/multi-institution funding model. The one-year-long terminal renewal award is offered to allow a smooth transition to other funding sources (which might include participating in a multi-PI/multi-institution award).

Track 4b: Accelerator Technology Partnerships

Eligibility is limited in Track 4b to domestic for-profit organizations, as the intent of this Track is to develop U.S. companies capable of producing particle accelerator components for DOE and commercial purposes.

Track 3 and Track 4a:

Track 3 (Accelerator Stewardship Test Facility Program) and Track 4a (Accelerator-Technology Sector Business Plans) are no longer accepting applications.
