Summary

The USPTO has granted a patent (US12587630B2) to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. for an electronic device and method for displaying 3D images. The patent covers technology involving user tracking sensors and AI-driven image generation models to adapt display content to the user's viewing angle.

What changed

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued patent US12587630B2 to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. for an electronic device and operation method for displaying 3D images. The patent details a system that utilizes a user tracking sensor to obtain a user's viewing angle and employs AI-based generation models (base image generation model and front image generation model) to decompose input images and generate specific view images. These generated images are then displayed on a base panel and a front panel, respectively, to provide a customized viewing experience based on the user's perspective and device characteristics.

This patent grant signifies a new intellectual property asset for Samsung in the field of 3D display technology, potentially impacting competitors and collaborators in the consumer electronics and display manufacturing sectors. While this is a patent grant and not a regulatory rule, it represents a significant development in the technological landscape that companies in this space should be aware of for competitive intelligence and potential licensing or infringement considerations. There are no immediate compliance obligations for other entities, but the patent's claims may influence future product development and design choices.

Abstract

An electronic device may include a base panel, an optical layer, a front panel, a user tracking sensor configured to obtain a viewing angle of a user, a memory, and a processor(s) configured to execute at least one instruction stored in the memory, wherein the processor(s) may be configured to obtain an input image including a plurality of view images, generate a base image by decomposing the input image by using a base image generation model, generate a front image corresponding to a viewing angle of the user by decomposing the input image by using a front image generation model, based on view characteristic information of the base panel which corresponds to the viewing angle of the user, view characteristic information of the front panel which corresponds to the viewing angle of the user, and characteristic information of the optical layer, and provide the image to the user by displaying the base image on the base panel and displaying the front image on the front panel.
