Summary

The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) provides guidance on individual income tax filing and payment options. It encourages online filing and payments through MyDORWAY, warning against third-party payment websites like DOXO.

What changed

The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) has updated its guidance on individual income tax filing and payment options. The document emphasizes the benefits of online filing, such as automatic calculations and faster processing, and promotes direct deposit for refunds. It also highlights the SCDOR's official online payment portal, MyDORWAY, as the recommended method for tax payments, warning taxpayers about the risks and potential additional fees associated with unaffiliated third-party payment websites like DOXO.

Taxpayers are advised to use MyDORWAY for secure and fee-free online payments. The guidance also reiterates options for paper filing and payment, though it notes these methods are slower and more prone to errors. Compliance officers should ensure that internal communications and taxpayer advisories reflect the SCDOR's preferred methods and warnings regarding third-party payment sites to avoid potential issues with late or misdirected payments.

What to do next

  1. Review SCDOR guidance on individual income tax filing and payment options.
  2. Ensure internal processes and communications align with SCDOR's recommended online filing and payment methods.
  3. Advise taxpayers to use the official MyDORWAY portal for payments and to exercise caution with third-party payment websites.

File and pay your Individual Income Tax online! On average, more than 90% of SC Individual Income Tax returns are filed online each year. Here's why:

Automatic calculations reduce the chance of errors.

Systematic checkpoints ensure your return is complete before your return can be submitted.

Filing online is the fastest and easiest way to complete your return, which means we can start processing it faster.

Choose direct deposit!

Direct deposit is the fastest, easiest, most secure way to receive your refund. As soon as we’ve processed your return, your refund will be deposited into your bank account.

How to file

File online

Free filing options You may qualify to file your federal and state returns with FREE tax filing software if you made $89,000 or less in 2025. Other electronic filing options File your federal and state returns online using software approved by the SCDOR.

File by paper

Filing by paper increases your chances of errors and paper returns take longer for us to process, which may delay any refund you may receive.

How to pay

Pay online with MyDORWAY

We recommend MyDORWAY for the easiest and safest way to pay your Income Tax bill online using a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) or from your checking or savings account. Make a payment or learn more about MyDORWAY.

Other payment options

If you file by paper, you can submit your payment information when you file or mail us a check.

Drafting your payment from your bank account is easier and faster than mailing in a paper check. Skip the post office, avoid getting your check lost in the mail, and simply check the ACH Debit box on line 36 and enter your banking information on line 37 of the SC1040.

To pay by paper check, mail the check to the address on the form, letter, or notice related to your payment, and please note:

  • The SCDOR only accepts checks drawn from a United States bank.
  • Your check may be converted to a debit (ACH) transaction which will process your payment faster from your bank account, and your payment will show as an electronic payment on your bank statement (you will not see a scanned image of your check).

What you should know about third-party payment websites like DOXO

We urge customers to be cautious of third-party online bill payment websites, including DOXO, when attempting to pay their SCDOR bills online.

DOXO is not affiliated with the SCDOR, and we cannot accept responsibility for transactions made through that site. DOXO and sites like it may charge additional fees, and the SCDOR cannot control when payments made through the site will be received. Customers will be responsible for missed or late payments.

The SCDOR offers online bill payments through our online tax portal, MyDORWAY, even if you don't have a MyDORWAY account. There are no additional fees for paying on MyDORWAY. You can access the payment portal on MyDORWAY without logging in by:

  • Visiting mydorway.dor.sc.gov and clicking Make a Payment OR
  • Typing dor.sc.gov/pay directly into your browser's web address bar Example:

Please note that typing “dor.sc.gov/pay" or similar search terms into a search engine like Google, instead of directly into your browser’s web address bar (as shown in the example above), may return results for DOXO and other third-party sites.
