TODAY: Personal Income Tax Filing Deadline
Marylanders reminded to file returns, request extensions, and pay taxes owed before midnight ANNAPOLIS, Md. (April 15, 2026) -- Today is the deadline for Marylanders to file their
state and federal personal income tax returns. Taxpayers who need additional time to file may request an extension; however, any estimated taxes owed must be paid by the filing deadline to avoid interest and penalties. A range of tax filing options is available to Marylanders. Taxpayers are encouraged to
file electronically using the Comptroller's iFile system at MarylandComptroller.gov,
which is secure, free, and the fastest way to process returns and receive refunds. Marylanders may also choose to file through a trusted tax professional or use IRS Free File options, which provide free federal filing for eligible taxpayers. Filing electronically helps reduce errors, speeds up processing, and ensures taxpayers receive the credits and refunds they are owed as quickly as possible. Working Marylanders may also qualify for up to $4,000 by claiming the State Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) on their tax return. Many working Marylanders qualify without realizing it, including those who owe taxes or file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Even if they worked part-time, seasonally, or are filing for the first time, they may still qualify. Taxpayers can check their eligibility for the state EITC and other tax credits at http://www.MarylandComptroller.gov/EarnedIt
Eligible Marylanders are also encouraged to take advantage of free tax preparation services. The Office of the Comptroller partners with community organizations across the state to support Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. In addition, taxpayers may schedule free tax preparation appointments at one of the agency's 11 branch offices or access virtual assistance. So far this tax season, the agency has processed more than 2,447,539 personal income tax returns, issued more than 1,576,196 refunds totaling over $2.23 Billion.
Taxpayers who miss today's deadline are still encouraged to file as soon as possible.
