Governor Green Secures IRS Deadline Extensions for Storm-Affected Residents and Businesses
Summary
The Hawaii Department of Taxation announces that Governor Josh Green secured IRS federal tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by the Kona-Low storm disaster beginning March 10, 2026. The IRS extended federal tax filing and payment deadlines to July 8, 2026, for all counties (Hawaii, Honolulu, Kauai, Maui). State income tax relief is also being provided until July 20, 2026, for eligible storm-impacted residents and businesses.
What changed
The IRS has granted federal tax relief to individuals and businesses in Hawaii affected by the severe storms, flooding, and mudslides from the Kona-Low disaster beginning March 10, 2026. Tax returns and payments originally due on or after March 10, 2026 are now due July 8, 2026. The relief applies to individual income tax returns, certain business tax filings, quarterly payroll filings, and certain excise tax payments. IRS will automatically identify and apply relief for taxpayers in the declared disaster area.
Affected parties in the covered counties (Hawaii, Honolulu, Kauai, Maui) do not need to take any action to receive federal relief. Those outside the covered area who were still affected by the disaster may request relief by contacting the IRS. State income tax relief is being provided separately until July 20, 2026 under State Tax Announcement 2026-03.

News Release 2026-05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 11, 2026 HONOLULU -- Resulting from a request for disaster relief by Governor Josh Green, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced federal tax relief for individuals and
businesses in Hawaiʻi affected by the severe storms, flooding and mudslides during the
recent state-declared Kona-Low disaster that began on March 10, 2026.
Residents and owners of businesses in the federally declared Hawaiʻi severe storms disaster area, which includes the counties of Hawaiʻi, Honolulu, Kauaʻi and Maui, now
have until July 8, 2026, to file federal tax returns and make tax payments that were originally due on or after March 10, 2026. "I am pleased and grateful that our request for a federal disaster declaration could also
bring relief to Hawaiʻi taxpayers," said Governor Green. "I applaud the IRS for
extending the federal tax deadlines and providing other relief for those impacted by this
disaster."
The relief applies to individual income tax returns, certain business tax filings, quarterly payroll filings and certain excise tax payments.
