Utah Joins $773M Albertsons Opioid Settlement
Utah's Attorney General has joined a multistate settlement with Albertsons Companies Inc. resolving claims that the pharmacy chain contributed to the opioid crisis through its dispensing practices. Attorney General Dan Rayfield announced an agreement in principle requiring grocery chain Albertsons—which operates in Oregon as Albertsons and Safeway—to pay up to $773 million to address its role in the opioid epidemic. Oregon will receive up to $38.2 million over nine years to fund addiction treatment and recovery programs. Nationally, $655 million will go into an abatement fund for states and local governments. The settlement is not yet final; both parties continue to negotiate remaining terms including injunctive relief governing future pharmacy operations.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced an agreement in principle requiring grocery chain Albertsons to pay up to $773,787,782.93 to address its role in the opioid epidemic. Albertsons operates California stores under Safeway and Vons. The agreement was reached through multistate negotiations led by California, Colorado, Illinois, and Oregon. Negotiations regarding injunctive relief remain ongoing.
Oregon Seeks $2.25M in Kroger Attorneys' Fees for Blocked Merger
Oregon, leading a nine-state coalition, filed a fee petition seeking approximately $10.3 million in attorneys' fees and costs from Kroger following the states' victory in blocking the $25 billion Kroger-Albertsons merger. Oregon's share totals $2,251,375 ($1,806,287 in fees and $445,088 in expenses). A February 27, 2026 court ruling found the states prevailed in FTC et al. v. Kroger and are entitled to recover their legal costs.
