DRE Celebrates Financial Literacy Month
Summary
The California Department of Real Estate (DRE) published a consumer alert recognizing National Financial Literacy Month in April 2026, directing consumers to DRE's financial education tools and resources for real estate transactions. The alert lists consumer publications covering home loans, foreclosure, tenant-landlord rights, and mortgage complaints, and recommends verifying licenses of real estate agents, brokers, and mortgage loan originators before engaging their services.
What changed
The DRE issued an informational consumer alert in recognition of Financial Literacy Month, highlighting available educational materials and tools for consumers engaged in real estate transactions. The alert does not impose new regulatory requirements or compliance obligations on licensees.
While the alert does not create binding obligations, real estate professionals and mortgage loan originators should be aware that consumers are being directed to verify license status and review any prior disciplinary actions before entering into transactions. Licensees should ensure their licensing records with DRE and NMLS are current and accurate.

DRE Celebrates Financial Literacy Month
Sacramento, California – In recognition of National Financial Literacy Month, the California Department
of Real Estate (DRE) encourages consumers to take advantage of the Department's financial education tools and resources to help make
informed, confident decisions about real estate—in particular when navigating the homebuying process or managing property transactions.
The DRE provides consumers a variety of educational materials to help them through buying or selling a home, getting a home loan, renting
a property, or looking to hire a property manager to help manage property.
Below are DRE resources for consumers to explore to help them make well-informed decisions during real estate transactions.
Consumer Resources:
- Verify a License: Buying or selling a home is big business transaction. Before selecting a real estate salesperson or broker to help through the process, consumers should always verify the license of a salesperson or broker by using DRE's Verify a License tool online. Only people licensed by DRE may represent others in buying, selling, or leasing property. If obtaining a mortgage loan to buy a property or refinancing a home, consumers should always verify the license of your mortgage loan originator through the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System. Reviewing the status of a license will inform a person about any prior discipline against that licensee.
