Pension Levy Ceiling Order (Northern Ireland) 2026
Summary
The Department for Communities has issued the Pension Protection Fund and Occupational Pension Schemes (Levy Ceiling) Order (Northern Ireland) 2026. This order sets the levy ceiling for the financial year beginning April 1, 2026, at approximately £1.47 billion and revokes the previous year's order.
What changed
The Department for Communities has finalized the Pension Protection Fund and Occupational Pension Schemes (Levy Ceiling) Order (Northern Ireland) 2026, effective March 31, 2026. This rule specifies the levy ceiling for the financial year commencing April 1, 2026, at £1,473,343,665.61, as required by the Pensions (Northern Ireland) Order 2005. The order revokes the 2025 levy ceiling order.
This change is primarily administrative, setting the maximum amount that can be raised through pension protection levies for the upcoming financial year. While it does not impose new obligations on employers or insurers beyond what is already covered by existing pension protection schemes, it is crucial for financial planning and risk assessment within the pension industry in Northern Ireland. Compliance officers should note the new ceiling for the financial year 2026-2027.
What to do next
- Note the updated pension levy ceiling of £1,473,343,665.61 for the financial year beginning April 1, 2026.
- Ensure internal financial planning and risk assessments reflect the new levy ceiling.
