Northern Ireland Judgment Enforcement Fees Increase
Summary
The Department of Justice in Northern Ireland has issued the Judgment Enforcement Fees (Amendment) Order 2026, increasing various enforcement fees. These changes, which include phased increases for several fee categories, come into operation on April 1, 2026, with further adjustments scheduled for April 1, 2027, and April 1, 2028.
What changed
The Department of Justice in Northern Ireland has amended the Judgment Enforcement Fees Order (Northern Ireland) 1996, introducing new fee schedules that will take effect from April 1, 2026, with subsequent increases on April 1, 2027, and April 1, 2028. The amendments affect fees for lodging notices of intent to apply for enforcement and for lodging applications for enforcement, with specific percentage and minimum fee adjustments based on the sum due on foot of the judgment. Fees for applications under Article 23(1) are also adjusted.
Legal professionals and courts in Northern Ireland must update their fee schedules to reflect these changes. The primary impact is on the cost of initiating and processing judgment enforcement actions. While the initial increases are modest, the phased nature of the adjustments requires ongoing attention. No specific compliance deadline is mentioned beyond the effective date of the fee increases.
What to do next
- Update internal fee schedules to reflect the new amounts effective April 1, 2026.
- Note the further fee increases scheduled for April 1, 2027, and April 1, 2028.
- Ensure accurate fee collection for all judgment enforcement actions initiated on or after April 1, 2026.
