What changed

The Prime Minister's Science, Innovation and Technology Advisory Council published its first report on 1 April 2026, recommending that the government reallocate $122 million over the next 3 years toward advanced technologies with the highest national impact potential. The report proposes four funding pillars: primary industries and the bioeconomy, technology for prosperity, environmental sustainability and resilience, and healthy people and a thriving society. It also recommends a balance of mission-led research focused on national priorities and investigator-led research to support novel ideas, and increased emphasis on measuring inputs, outputs, and impact to inform investment decisions.

Affected parties—including government agencies, research institutions, and publicly funded research organisations—should note that this report is advisory and does not yet create binding obligations. The council's recommendations will inform the Government's Science Investment Plan to be released around mid-2026, which Research Funding NZ will use to develop Pillar Investment Plans outlining specific actions to deliver strategic research priorities.
