NOTICE: Fraudulent emails sent to agents requesting payment, impersonating NIPR

LINCOLN, Neb (April 10, 2026) – The Nebraska Department of Insurance is warning agents about a fraudulent email campaign targeting insurance producers pretending to be agencies.

The National Insurance Producers Registry (NIPR) was made aware of the active phishing email campaign and is asking insurance agents to use caution. The emails reference past due invoices and may appear to come from trusted email domains such as @nipr.com, @naic.org, or @stripe. These messages are fraudulent and were not sent from an official NIPR email address or account.

The emails impersonate NIPR and request payment. Agents should be aware of any unexpected or unsolicited invoices received, and these should be treated as suspicious.

Ways to identify a fraudulent email include:

  • Sender’s email address: Fraudulent email addresses can impersonate real addresses
  • Generic greetings: May begin with “Dear Customer” instead of personal information
  • Tone and grammar: Spelling mistakes, unusual phrasing, and a sense of urgency can all be signs of a fraudulent email
  • Hover over links (don’t click): This reveals the URL and can help determine if it is legitimate To address the threat, NIPR and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) are investigating and monitoring the phishing activity. Warning alerts have been posted on NIPR’s website and in the licensing application center to increase awareness.

If an agent receives an invoice email claiming to be NIPR that was not expected, stop immediately and take no action. Do not open any attachments, click links, or submit payment in response to these suspicious emails. If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of the email, contact niprbillingdept@nipr.com before responding or taking further action.
