Patent Application: Recycled Material in Flexible Packaging for Absorbent Articles
Summary
The USPTO has published a patent application (US20260083600A1) for a package containing absorbent articles made with recycled materials. The application details a multilayer plastic film with at least 50% recycled content and absorbent articles with at least 5% recycled content, aiming for an improved eco-factor.
What changed
This document is a patent application, not a regulatory rule or guidance. It describes a novel packaging solution for absorbent articles that incorporates a significant percentage of post-consumer recycled material in both the flexible packaging film (at least 50 wt. %) and the absorbent articles themselves (at least 5 wt. %). The application, filed on September 19, 2025, aims to improve the environmental footprint of these products.
While this is a patent application and does not impose direct regulatory obligations, it signals potential future trends in product sustainability and material sourcing. Manufacturers of absorbent articles and packaging materials may wish to monitor developments related to this and similar patent filings. Compliance officers in the consumer goods sector should be aware of emerging sustainable material technologies that could influence future product design and regulatory considerations.

Abstract
A package comprising a bag and a stack of absorbent articles, wherein the bag comprises a multilayer plastic film, in particular multilayer plastic composite film, based on plastic recyclate (recycled plastic). The plastic film has a plastic recycled content of at least 50 wt. % based on the plastic film. The one or more absorbent articles comprise at least 5 wt. % of recycled content based on the total weight of the absorbent article excluding the absorbent core material. The package has an eco-factor of at least 0.05 according to the method herein.
