European Patent EP4681769A3 for Bodily Organ Flow Control
Summary
The European Patent Office has published patent EP4681769A3 for an apparatus designed to control fluid flow within a bodily organ. The patent, assigned to Implantica Patent Ltd., describes an implantable constriction device combined with electrical stimulation to manage bodily matter flow.
What changed
The European Patent Office (EPO) has published patent application EP4681769A3, titled 'APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING FLOW IN A BODILY ORGAN.' The patent, filed by Implantica Patent Ltd., details an implantable device that uses a combination of constriction and electrical stimulation to control the flow of bodily fluids or matter within a patient's organ lumen. The abstract describes the apparatus as influencing flow by constricting the tissue wall and stimulating it to contract, thereby actively moving the fluid or matter.
This publication represents the granting of a patent, not a regulatory rule or guidance that imposes new compliance obligations. Regulated entities in the medical device sector, particularly those involved in implantable devices and organ function management, should note this patent as it pertains to potential intellectual property and market exclusivity in this area. No immediate compliance actions are required for most entities, but companies developing similar technologies should be aware of this granted patent.

Abstract
An apparatus for controlling a flow of fluid and/or other bodily matter in a lumen formed by a tissue wall of a patient's organ. The apparatus comprises an implantable constriction device for gently constricting at least one portion of the tissue wall to influence the flow in the lumen, the tissue wall portion extending between an upstream end and a downstream end of the wall portion with respect to the direction of the flow in the lumen. The apparatus further comprises a stimulation device for stimulating the tissue wall portion with electric pulses, and a control device for controlling the stimulation device to stimulate the wall portion, as the constriction device constricts the wall portion, to cause contraction of the wall portion to further influence the flow in the lumen. The control device is adapted to control at least one of the constriction and stimulation devices to affect the wall portion such that the fluid and/or other bodily matter is actively moved in the lumen.
