Surgical Vessel Sizing System Patent Grant
Summary
USPTO granted patent US12593989B2 to Briteseed, LLC for a surgical system that determines vessel size using optical sensors. The system analyzes pulsatile and non-pulsatile light components to calculate vessel diameter. The patent names 6 inventors and contains 7 claims.
What changed
USPTO granted patent US12593989B2 to Briteseed, LLC on April 7, 2026, for a surgical system and method to determine vessel size using an array of light sensors at a surgical instrument working end. The system separates pulsatile and non-pulsatile signal components to identify peak magnitudes and calculate vessel resting outer diameter. The patent application (18053331) was filed November 7, 2022, and contains 7 claims under CPC classifications A61B 5/02007, A61B 5/02416, A61B 5/1076, and A61B 5/1459.
This patent grant confirms exclusive intellectual property rights for Briteseed, LLC in surgical optical sensing technology for vessel sizing. Competitors developing similar optical sensing systems for surgical instruments should review the claims for potential infringement risks. Healthcare providers using proprietary surgical systems may want to verify licensing arrangements. The patent does not impose compliance obligations but establishes enforceable IP rights that could affect future product development strategies.

Abstract
A surgical system used to determine a size of a vessel within a region proximate to a working end of a surgical instrument includes at least one light emitter disposed at the working end, an array of light sensors disposed opposite the at least one light emitter, the array comprising a least one row of light sensors, individual light sensors in the row adapted to generate a signal comprising a pulsatile and a non-pulsatile component, and a controller coupled to the array, the controller comprising a splitter to separate the pulsatile component from the non-pulsatile component, and an analyzer to determine the magnitudes of the pulsatile and non-pulsatile components at the individual light sensors, to determine a first peak magnitude and a second peak magnitude of the pulsatile components, and to determine a resting outer diameter of the vessel based on the first and second peak magnitudes.
