Patent Application for Blood Flow and Shear Stress Calculation
Summary
The USPTO has published a patent application (US20260088181A1) for a method to calculate blood flow and shear stress in aortas with bicuspid aortic valves. The application, filed by the University of Seoul Industry Cooperation Foundation, details a process using characteristic values of the valve to compute these metrics.
What changed
This document is a publication of a patent application filed with the USPTO, not a regulatory rule or guidance. The application (US20260088181A1) describes a method for calculating blood flow and shear stress in aortas, specifically for patients with a bicuspid aortic valve. The method involves receiving specific valve characteristics and using a governing equation in a bipolar coordinate system to compute blood flow per unit area and associated shear stress.
As this is a patent application, it does not impose direct regulatory obligations on entities. However, it signifies potential future technological advancements in cardiovascular monitoring and diagnostics. Companies involved in medical device development, health informatics, or cardiovascular research may find this technology relevant for innovation and intellectual property considerations.
