Summary

The WV Board of Pharmacy has voted to replace the West Virginia-specific Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (WV-MPJE) with the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (UMPJE) effective August 1, 2026. UMPJE eligibility applications will open May 4, 2026, with candidates able to choose either exam through July 31, 2026. After passing the UMPJE, pharmacists receive a 90-day provisional license and must complete a WV-Plus Module (asynchronous webinar plus open-note quiz) to obtain a full license through the next renewal cycle.

Why this matters

Pharmacist licensure candidates in West Virginia should note that the August 1, 2026 transition creates a hard deadline for exam selection — the WV-MPJE will not be available after July 31, 2026. Those with pending WV-MPJE applications should contact NABP promptly to switch to UMPJE and secure a refund. Candidates who pass the UMPJE after August 1 will have exactly 90 days to complete the WV-Plus Module quiz; scheduling delays in completing that module will directly affect license activation timing.

What changed

The WV Board of Pharmacy is replacing the state-specific WV-MPJE with the NABP Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (UMPJE) as the required jurisprudence exam for pharmacist licensure in West Virginia. The transition period runs through July 31, 2026, during which candidates may select either exam through their NABP e-Profile; active WV-MPJE applications will be refunded after that date.

Pharmacists newly licensed via the UMPJE will receive a 90-day provisional license and must complete the WV-Plus Module (covering WV-specific law via asynchronous webinar and open-note quiz) within that window. Failure to pass the quiz renders the license inactive until the quiz is passed; retakes cost $50 each. Transfer applicants must pass the UMPJE and submit an Electronic Licensure Transfer Program application post-transition. Candidates should prepare for the new exam format: 100 scored items plus 20 pretest items, 3-option multiple choice, 180 minutes, with a 30-day minimum between attempts (max 5 per year without board approval).

WV Board of Pharmacy Implements the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (UMPJE)

By K Capehart 4/27/2026 WV Board of Pharmacy Implements the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (UMPJE)

At the December 2025 WV Board of Pharmacy meeting, the Board voted to move forward with implementation of the Uniform Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (UMPJE).  The new jurisprudence examination requirement will be implemented with a WV-Plus Module.

Applicants for pharmacist licensure in WV will be required to meet all the requirements that have already been in place and the UMPJE will replace the WV-MPJE. Candidates may select either the WV-MPJE or UMPJE through their NABP e-Profile while the WV-MPJE for West Virginia remains available through July 31, 2026, at which time it will be discontinued.

The UMPJE eligibility applications for West Virginia will be available to candidates beginning May 4, 2026. The eligibility will be granted after conferral.

Candidates may select either the WV-MPJE or UMPJE through their NABP e-Profile while the WV-MPJE for West Virginia remains available through July 31, 2026. Individuals with active WV-MPJE applications wishing to switch to UMPJE may contact NABP at ExamServices@nabp.pharmacy and will be provided a refund for the MPJE application fee. All remaining active WV-MPJE applications will be refunded after 7/31/2026.

Effective August 1, 2026, the West Virginia Board of Pharmacy will require passage of the *uniform version** of the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination ® (MPJE ®) as a condition for pharmacist licensure and will no longer offer or require the West Virginia MPJE for all licensure applicants. For additional information regarding the new Uniform MPJE™ application process, visit the* Examination section of the NABP website.

Once the candidate has successfully passed the UMPJE a 90-day WV pharmacist license will be issued and access granted to the WV-Plus Module. This is an asynchronous webinar and written material covering WV specific law important for practice here. The individual will have 90 days to successfully pass an open note/book quiz available online provided by the Board. Failure to pass the online quiz will result in the pharmacist license becoming inactive until the individual successfully passes the online quiz.  Once the quiz is passed the license will become active and has full duration through the next renewal cycle of June 30 th in approximately 2 years.  Additional retakes of the WV-Plus quiz are $50 each.

Exam Specifics

The UMPJE will consist of the following:

100 scored and 20 pretest items (questions)*

Items/questions will be 3-option multiple choice.

Candidate consent screen – candidates will have the option to consent to share the exam results with their school/college of pharmacy.*

Pearson seat time is 180 minutes.*

Each exam attempt can be taken every 30 days, with a maximum of 5 times per year without requiring board approval.*

*Mirrors current MPJE

Licensure Transfer Applicants

Licensed pharmacists transferring into West Virginia must pass the UMPJE and submit an Electronic Licensure Transfer Program® application post-transition after August 1, 2026.
