Three consultations are currently open: antenatal hepatitis C screening (deadline June 3, 2026), newborn biliary atresia screening (deadline May 20, 2026), and targeted antenatal HTLV-1 screening (deadline May 13, 2026). What changed
The UK NSC publishes guidance on its public consultation process, listing three currently open consultations on screening recommendations. These cover antenatal screening for hepatitis C virus in pregnancy, newborn screening for biliary atresia, and targeted antenatal screening for HTLV-1. The document describes two types of consultations: condition recommendation consultations (whether to screen for a condition) and programme change consultations (how to screen for conditions with existing programmes).
Healthcare providers, public health authorities, and patients should note the consultation deadlines. The HTLV-1 consultation closes May 13, 2026; biliary atresia consultation closes May 20, 2026; and hepatitis C consultation closes June 3, 2026. Stakeholders interested in contributing to UK screening policy decisions can submit comments through the UK NSC website and subscribe to updates for future consultations.

Types of UK NSC consultation
The UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) runs the following types of public consultations.
Condition recommendation consultations
These relate to whether to screen for a certain condition. They are the most common type of consultation. The UK NSC reviews conditions every 3 years to determine whether it can recommend a screening programme. You can find these conditions in the UK NSC ’s recommendations list.
There are slightly different review processes depending on whether the condition is currently recommended or not currently recommended for screening.
Programme change consultations
For conditions where there is already a population screening programme, the UK NSC carries out programme change reviews. They relate to how to screen, rather than whether to screen. They are to make recommendations on changing an existing programme, for instance to introduce a new type of screening test.
