USPTO Patent Application: Dementia with Lewy Bodies Identification Method
Summary
The USPTO has published a patent application detailing a method for identifying Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) using DNA methylation patterns. The application, filed by inventors from Spain, describes a diagnostic technique involving mitochondrial DNA analysis and provides for classification models, oligonucleotides, and kits.
What changed
USPTO Patent Application US20260085355A1, published on March 26, 2026, describes a novel method for identifying Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) in a subject. The method involves analyzing the methylation pattern in the D-loop region and/or ND1 gene of mitochondrial DNA from a subject's sample. The application also covers classification models, oligonucleotides, and kits designed to perform this diagnostic technique.
This patent application, while not a regulatory rule, indicates potential future developments in diagnostic tools for neurodegenerative diseases. Companies involved in diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology may find this relevant for R&D and intellectual property considerations. No immediate compliance actions are required for regulated entities, but monitoring patent landscapes in this area is advisable.
