SAC positions are part-time roles helping government departments access and interpret scientific information.
What changed
The Government Office for Science announced recruitment for scientific experts to fill Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) and Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) positions across UK government departments. CSA roles are full-time positions (minimum 4 days per week) for at least 3 years, providing independent science advice directly to ministers. SAC roles are part-time positions allowing experts to influence policymaking while maintaining their existing academic work. No regulatory obligations or compliance requirements are imposed by this announcement.
Scientific professionals and academics interested in government policy influence should monitor the Government Office for Science vacancy page and the Apply for Public Appointment service for upcoming opportunities. These roles offer a pathway for scientists and engineers to contribute to evidence-based government decision-making without permanently leaving their primary fields.
