Recently, our forces joined Republic of Cyprus firefighters as fires spread rapidly across 120 square kilometres in hot and windy conditions. This united response helped protect 15 villages that were threatened by the flames.
UK Chinook helicopters worked alongside local ground teams to tackle the blazes from the air. Our personnel also provided bulldozers, medical support and logistics help to the Republic of Cyprus emergency response.

The scale of the emergency meant that UK facilities were also at risk, with fires also spreading towards Troodos and Olympus overnight. Throughout this challenging period, our personnel remained committed to the joint effort, continuing to work together with Republic of Cyprus teams to safeguard local communities.
Through these combined efforts, all fires were brought under control less than two days later, but sadly two lives were lost. The courage and resilience shown by local communities during this crisis was remarkable.
