Summary

The Greater London Authority Elections (Amendment) Rules 2026 (UKSI 2026/450) amend the Greater London Authority Elections Rules 2007 (S.I. 2007/3541) by modifying Schedules 4 and 8, which contain modifications applicable when ballot papers are counted manually rather than with an electronic counting system. The amendments allow the verification and counting of ballot papers in each Assembly constituency to be undertaken in more than one location within the constituency and at different times. The instrument extends to England and Wales only and comes into force on 15 May 2026, applying to Authority elections where the notice of election is published on or after that date.

About this source

This feed tracks every Act of Parliament, Statutory Instrument, Welsh Statutory Instrument, Scottish Statutory Instrument, and Northern Ireland order published on legislation.gov.uk, the UK government's official legislation publisher. Around 180 new instruments a month, ranging from primary acts to narrow technical amendments to a single regulation. GovPing publishes each as it appears, with the official title, SI number, jurisdiction, and the date in force where stated. Watch this if you advise on UK regulatory compliance, brief clients on emerging law, or need a same-day signal that your area of practice has been touched. Recent examples: a Buckinghamshire adult education statutory instrument, an Avian Influenza Amendment Order regulating poultry movement.

What changed

The Rules amend the 2007 Greater London Authority Elections Rules by modifying how postal ballot papers are handled during manual counting: they must now be mixed with ballot papers from at least one ballot box, and ballot papers from a ballot box must be mixed with ballot papers from at least one other ballot box before counting. The Rules also insert a new requirement to separate ballot papers relating to the election from those relating to other Authority elections, and omit references to electronic counting systems in applicable schedules. Electoral administrators in Greater London should note these procedural changes apply to Authority elections where the notice of election is published on or after 15 May 2026, and should update their manual counting protocols accordingly.
