As Director of the Department of environmental Health (DEH). I am pleased to join our community in observing Earth Day – a moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to protect the natural beauty and resources of the Cayman Islands.
Here in Cayman, our environment is not just something we admire, it is central to our way of life. From our pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs to our neighbourhoods and public spaces, the health of our environment directly impacts our economy, our well-being, and the legacy we leave for future generations.
In recent days, the fire at George Town landfill has reinforced the very real impact that waste management challenges can have on our environment, public health, and daily life. We recognise the concern this has caused for residents, particularly those affected by smoke and disruption, and we thank the emergency teams that worked so tirelessly and diligently to contain and manage the situation.
Earth Day reminds us that environmental stewardship is not a one-day commitment, but a daily practice.
Whether it is reducing and properly managing household and commercial waste, supporting recycling, or maintaining clean and safe communities, these everyday actions directly reduce environmental and public health risks. Every action – no matter how small – makes a difference.
At the Department of Environmental Health, we remain committed to protect the public from environmental health related hazards through measures and activities including management of food hygiene and safety, laboratory services, district sanitation and rodent control, engineering and developmental control, solid and hazardous wastes including waste collection, recycling and disposal; and public education and promotion programmes. We continue to work alongside residents, business, and partner agencies to ensure that Cayman Remains clean, safe, and sustainable.
This year, I encourage each of us to take a moment to consider how we can contribute more intentionally to preserving our islands. Let us lead by example keeping our surroundings clean, respecting our natural habitats, and inspiring others to do the same.
Together, we can ensure that the Cayman Islands continue to thrive, not only for today but for generations to come.
