HM Government of Gibraltar is pleased to confirm the comprehensive package of security measures that are being rolled out ahead of the implementation of the Treaty, to keep Gibraltar safe.

The measures represent a coordinated and integrated approach to modern border and public space security, combining advanced technology with enhanced physical infrastructure and strengthened operational capability. They have been developed following detailed technical assessment and recommendations from security experts in the Royal Gibraltar Police.

Central to the package is the installation of an extensive, high-specification CCTV network throughout Gibraltar, including along the entirety of the current border fence line. A total of twenty-six cameras will be deployed from Western Beach through to Eastern Beach and will provide continuous overlapping coverage, ensuring there are no blind spots and enabling uninterrupted tracking of movement along the frontier.

This will be complemented by the introduction of security-grade LED lighting across the border area. The lighting will act as a visible deterrent, increase the vulnerability of any potential intruder, and significantly enhance the effectiveness of surveillance systems, particularly during hours of darkness. The lighting posts will be fitted with anti-climb and anti-vandal measures.

Additionally, facial recognition cameras will be used in strategic locations including the new Joint Agency Facility, the surrounding road network, vehicle and pedestrian entrances to Kingsway Tunnel, the pedestrian and cycle access points to the runway. These will ensure that movement into and within Gibraltar can be monitored effectively at all times, supporting Gibraltar’s law enforcement agencies in preventing and detecting criminal activity.

In addition, a network of sixty CCTV cameras will be installed across Main Street, Casemates, Landport and surrounding areas. A further 12 facial recognition cameras will be deployed at Landport and at every main junction on Main Street, forming a wide-scale strategic monitoring system designed to enhance public safety, assist in incident response, and support criminal investigations.

All systems will be monitored on a continuous basis from a dedicated control room located at Gibraltar Airport, providing 24/7 live oversight and rapid response capability.

The Royal Gibraltar Police will act as data controller for all systems and will oversee their operation in strict compliance with applicable data protection legislation. The project is being delivered in partnership with local contractors, specialist security providers and relevant Government departments, ensuring both technical excellence and adherence to Gibraltar’s legal and regulatory framework.

Together, these measures represent a significant investment in Gibraltar’s security architecture. They are designed not only to deter unlawful activity but also to provide law enforcement with the tools necessary to respond quickly and effectively.

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, said: “This is about keeping Gibraltar safe. We are investing in the very best technology, integrating it with our law enforcement capabilities and doing so in a way that respects our laws and our people.

“The package of technological measures I’m pleased to confirm today are further to increased investment in the resources and capabilities of the Royal Gibraltar Police, HM Customs and the Borders and Coastguard Agency to ensure that our law enforcement agencies have everything they need to get the job done. Works to develop the Joint Agency Facility in the area of the border are underway and we can expect the delivery of 12 new 4x4 service vehicles in the coming weeks.
