Our Power, Our Planet: Earth Day 2026

22 April 2026 | Press Release | By: MHES Communications

This Earth Day, The Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability and the Department of Environmental Health proudly joins the people of the Cayman Islands in reaffirming our shared commitment to protecting and preserving our natural environment under this year’s theme “Our Power, Our Planet.”

This year’s observance comes in the aftermath of a significant fire at the George Town Landfill, highlighting longstanding challenges in waste management and the urgency of sustained action. The Government acknowledges the concerns raised by the public and continues to prioritise both immediate response and long-term solutions.

The theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, reminds us that each of us holds the power to shape the future of our environment. In the Cayman Islands, our beautiful beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and caring community are not only sources of pride, but also vital to our health, economy, and identity. Protecting them requires collective action and a shared sense of responsibility.

The Honourable Katherine Ebanks-Wilks, Minister of Health, Environment and Sustainability, emphasises this collective role, stating: “This year’s theme, ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, speaks to both responsibility and action. The recent landfill fire underscored the real impact that waste management challenges can have on our environment, public health, and daily life. As a government, we are focused on strengthening how waste is managed in the near term while advancing a modern, sustainable system for the future. The choices we make today, how we reduce, manage, and dispose of waste, will define the resilience of our islands for generations to come.”

Echoing this message, Richard Simms, Director of the Department of Environmental Health, highlighted the importance of individual action: “Our power lies in the everyday decisions we make. Proper waste disposal, reducing litter, supporting recycling efforts, and caring for our surroundings are all practical ways we can protect our planet. When communities come together with shared purpose, the impact is both immediate and lasting.”

Tamara Ebanks, Chief Officer for the Ministry of Health, Environment and Sustainability, added: “Through stronger policy, improved operational management, and long-term infrastructure planning, we are working to ensure our waste systems, natural resources, and communities remain resilient and protected.”

The Ministry remains focused on delivering both immediate improvements and long-term solutions, including strengthening waste management systems, reducing environmental risks, and protecting public health.

This Earth Day, let us embrace the power we each hold and take meaningful steps – both big and small – to protect our environment. Together, we can ensure that the Cayman Islands continue to thrive for for the benefit and enjoyment of tomorrow’s communities.

Happy Earth Day!
