Summary

The California Department of Justice is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 9, 2026, involving deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. This investigation is mandated by Assembly Bill 1506 and will be independently reviewed by the DOJ.

What changed

The California Department of Justice (DOJ), under the authority of Assembly Bill 1506, has initiated an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that resulted in a death on February 9, 2026, in San Leandro, California. The incident involved deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. The DOJ's California Police Shooting Investigation Team is conducting the review, and the findings will be submitted to the DOJ's Special Prosecutions Section for independent assessment.

This action signifies a substantive regulatory review of a critical incident involving law enforcement. The DOJ is actively seeking information from the public related to this shooting. While this is an investigation and not an enforcement action against a specific entity at this stage, it highlights the increased scrutiny and independent review processes now in place for officer-involved shootings in California, as mandated by AB 1506. Law enforcement agencies should be aware of these mandated investigative procedures and the potential for independent review by the state DOJ.
