Summary

The UK's MHRA has updated its list of medical devices granted exceptional use authorisations. This guidance document provides transparency on manufacturers and devices that have received exemptions, including those whose authorisations have expired or been cancelled.

What changed

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has updated its guidance document detailing medical devices that have been granted exceptional use authorisations. This update includes new additions, modifications, and removals from the list of manufacturers and their devices that have received exemptions to ensure continued supply within the UK's NHS and social care settings. The document also lists devices whose authorisations have recently expired, been withdrawn, or cancelled.

This update is primarily informational for medical device manufacturers and potentially for healthcare providers and importers. While the authorisations are issued directly to manufacturers and typically do not permit distributor sales, the list serves as a reference for the regulatory status of specific devices. Compliance officers should note the ongoing nature of these updates and ensure they are aware of which devices are currently covered by exceptional use authorisations, particularly if sourcing or supplying medical devices within the UK.

List of medical devices that are no longer covered by an exceptional use authorisation

HTML

Details

To ensure transparency around the supply of medical devices in the UK, we are now providing a list of manufacturers and devices granted an exceptional use application. We also provide a list of recently expired, withdrawn or cancelled authorisations for a 2-month period.

Medical devices granted an exceptional use authorisation can be sold to the NHS and within the social care setting to ensure a continued supply of medical devices.

Exceptional use authorisations will be issued directly to the manufacturer of the medical device and normally do not allow for distributor sales.

We only consider applications where there is a clear clinical need and there is no available supply of CE marked or already derogated alternatives.

We publish an updated list weekly (if there are any changes to report) to reflect any new, withdrawn or expired applications.
