What changed
JNCC published annual official statistics on population trends of breeding birds in the UK to 2025, covering over 100 species. The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) results are presented at UK and country level where sufficient data exist. The BBS is jointly funded by BTO, RSPB, and JNCC and relies on volunteer data recorders.
These statistics serve as indicators of countryside health and inform conservation priorities and reporting. No compliance obligations are created by this publication; it is purely informational for conservationists, researchers, policymakers, and the public interested in UK environmental monitoring data.

Details
The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the main scheme for monitoring population changes of common breeding birds in the UK, providing an important indicator of the health of the countryside. Population trends are produced annually for over 100 species. Results are presented at UK level and at country level where there are sufficient data, and are used widely to inform conservation priorities, action, and reporting.
The BBS is a Partnership jointly funded by BTO, RSPB and JNCC, and is indebted to the thousands of volunteer data recorders who take part.
