What changed

The Mining Remediation Authority issued updated guidance on its permit process for investigation and treatment works. The 6 October 2025 update revised the online permit application portal URL to permits.miningremediation.co.uk. Prior updates included clarifying that insurance must be adequate to cover likely claims rather than requiring a specific £10 million minimum for small-scale operations, and defining that non-commercial public bodies and regulated utilities following HM Treasury insurance guidelines meet insurance requirements. Processing turnaround times were set at 20 working days for standard permits and 10 working days for expedited permits, with expedited processing charged at twice the standard rate.

Affected parties including developers, construction firms, and environmental consultants seeking to conduct mining investigation or treatment works should review the updated guidance before submitting permit applications. Applicants should note the revised online portal address, updated insurance sufficiency standards, and current processing timelines to ensure applications are complete and fee structures are understood.

What to do next

  1. Review the permit application process before submitting works applications
  2. Use the updated online portal at permits.miningremediation.co.uk for applications
