HPAI Outbreak Assessment, Great Britain and Europe, April 2026
Summary
DEFRA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency published an updated High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak assessment covering Great Britain and Europe as of April 10, 2026. The assessment includes risk evaluations for bird fairs, shows, markets, sales, and other gatherings, as well as updated data on H5Nx detections in dairy cattle. Multiple risk assessment documents are available covering the period from February through April 2026.
What changed
DEFRA published an updated High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza outbreak assessment covering Great Britain and Europe as of April 10, 2026. The assessment documents the continued presence of HPAI H5Nx across the region, including risk evaluations associated with bird fairs, shows, markets, sales, and other gatherings where birds are brought together. Updated information on HPAI antibodies detected in dairy cattle is also included.
Poultry keepers, bird owners, and agricultural stakeholders should monitor these assessments regularly and maintain heightened biosecurity awareness. The risk assessments provide guidance on evaluating and mitigating risks associated with bird gatherings, which is relevant for anyone involved in poultry husbandry, bird shows, markets, or avian-related activities across Great Britain.
