Stream Advisory Rescinded for Chikaskia River in Kingman County
Summary
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a stream advisory for the Chikaskia River in Kingman County, Kansas. The advisory was issued due to a crude oil and produced water spill and has been lifted following successful remediation efforts by multiple agencies.
What changed
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has officially rescinded a stream advisory previously in place for a section of the Chikaskia River and an unnamed tributary in Kingman County. This advisory was initially issued due to a spill of crude oil and produced water from an oil production lease. The rescission follows a determination by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC), Kingman County Sheriff’s Office, KDHE, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that remediation efforts have effectively removed the majority of the spilled oil from the unnamed tributary.
While this is a positive development, regulated entities operating in the vicinity should remain vigilant. The KDHE advises reporting any further detection of oil in the area to their incident hotline at 785-296-1679. This action signifies the successful conclusion of a specific environmental incident response, but underscores the ongoing need for prompt reporting and adherence to environmental remediation standards following spills.
What to do next
- Report any further oil detection in the vicinity to the KDHE incident hotline at 785-296-1679.
