Summary

The USPTO has granted a patent (US12583016B2) to TOYOTA JIDOSHA KABUSHIKI KAISHA for a method of manufacturing electrodes using dry classification of active material powder. The patent includes a classification system and details on detecting mesh screen breakage during the process.

What changed

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted patent US12583016B2 to TOYOTA JIDOSHA KABUSHIKI KAISHA for an electrode material manufacturing method. The patented process involves dry classification of active material powder using a classifier equipped with a mesh screen, blade, and motor. A key feature is the detection of mesh screen breakage by monitoring the classifier's operation sound or motor torque, which then prevents the affected electrode material from being used in manufacturing.

This patent grant is primarily an intellectual property event and does not impose new regulatory obligations on manufacturers. However, it signifies a technological advancement in battery electrode production. Companies operating in the battery manufacturing sector, particularly those involved in materials processing and quality control, may wish to review the patent to understand potential licensing opportunities or to ensure their own processes do not infringe on this granted patent. No immediate compliance actions are required for entities not directly involved with this specific patented technology.

Abstract

An electrode material containing active material powder is prepared. Dry classification of the electrode material is performed by a classifier. An electrode is manufactured by using the electrode material subjected to the dry classification. The classifier includes a mesh screen, a blade, and a motor. Breakage of the mesh screen is detected by monitoring either or both of an operation sound of the classifier and torque of the motor. The electrode material contained in the classifier will no longer be used for manufacturing of the electrode when breakage of the mesh screen is detected.
