NESE Pipeline Groundbreaking Ceremony
Summary
U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, and Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Northeast Supply Enhancement Pipeline on April 14, 2026. The Williams Companies project will transport natural gas from Pennsylvania into New York City and Long Island, adding 400,000 dekatherms per day of capacity—enough to serve 2.3 million homes. The pipeline remains on track for Q4 2027 service.
What changed
The Department of Energy announced a groundbreaking ceremony for the Northeast Supply Enhancement Pipeline, marking a milestone in the project that received permits from New York and New Jersey under President Trump's National Energy Dominance Council. The pipeline represents a $1 billion direct investment by Williams Companies and is projected to lower electricity bills by $6 billion over 15 years while stimulating $1.8 billion in economic development.
This announcement does not create compliance obligations or regulatory requirements. It serves as ceremonial recognition of a completed permitting milestone for an energy infrastructure project. Energy companies and investors monitoring the NESE project should track progress toward the Q4 2027 in-service date.

Wright, Zeldin, and Burgum Break Ground on NESE Pipeline in New York City to Deliver Reliable, Affordable Natural Gas to the Northeast

NEW YORK— U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum today participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Pipeline. This pipeline, of Williams Companies, will transport natural gas from Pennsylvania into New York City and Long Island, providing affordable and reliable energy for millions of Americans while meeting the growing energy demands of the region.
President Trump and his National Energy Dominance Council worked across party lines to secure the necessary permits for this project from the states of New York and New Jersey last fall. NESE is an expansion of Williams’ Transco pipeline system across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York that will add 400,000 dekatherms per day of capacity. This is enough energy to serve the equivalent of 2.3 million homes. NESE remains on track to be in service by the fourth quarter of 2027.
“For decades, poor political choices obstructed the building of energy infrastructure, leading to higher energy costs for millions of Americans. President Trump promised to lower energy costs and to get America building again—that is exactly what the groundbreaking of the NESE pipeline will accomplish,” said Energy Secretary Chris Wright. “This project is a win-win: natural gas is a reliable, low-cost, clean burning option for New Yorkers to heat and power their homes and businesses. President Trump, Secretary Burgum, Administrator Zeldin and I will continue fighting to build more energy infrastructure so that all Americans have access to affordable, reliable, and secure American energy.”
“Breaking ground on the NESE pipeline marks a massive milestone for millions of New Yorkers seeking access to reliable, affordable natural gas. Delivering natural gas from Pennsylvania to New York City and Long Island will lower costs while helping to meet the growing energy demand of this region,” said EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin. “I, like so many New Yorkers, am extremely grateful for President Trump’s leadership, along with his National Energy Dominance Council, for getting the permits necessary to allow this project to advance. We celebrate this incredible accomplishment and will continue pursuing every way possible to make life more affordable for all Americans.”
“While China has outpaced American electricity production, past administrations put our energy and national security at risk by burying America’s Balance Sheet under red tape,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. “Under President Donald J. Trump, we’re reversing course with projects like the NESE pipeline to unleash American Energy Dominance, lower costs for American consumers, and restore a strong, reliable grid. This project alone is expected to lower electricity bills by $6 billion over the next 15 years and stimulate up to $1.8 billion in economic development. That’s a huge win for American families!”
“When government, labor, and industry pull in the same direction, there’s nothing we can’t accomplish, and NESE is a $1 billion direct investment in the American worker,” said Williams Companies CEO Chad Zamarin.
Up next on the priority list: getting Constitution Pipeline approved to allow many New England residents to tap into the same abundant resources, especially during brutally cold winter months. This project has been blocked by Democrats in Albany, restricting many Americans from accessing the jobs, resources, and lower energy costs that will come with this vital project.
