The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is inviting expressions of interest from stakeholders to join the 2028 Integrated System Plan (ISP) Consumer Panel, an independent advisory body that provides a consumer-focused perspective on Australia’s long-term energy planning.

The ISP sets out the least-cost investment pathway for the National Electricity Market (NEM) to meet consumer energy needs and government policies through to 2050. The ISP is published at least every two years.

The Consumer Panel plays a critical role in ensuring consumer interests are embedded in this planning process. Under the National Electricity Rules, the Panel provides independent assessments of the evidence and reasoning underpinning AEMO’s key ISP publications, including the Inputs, Assumptions and Scenarios Report and the Draft ISP.

Panel members are selected to collectively represent a broad range of consumer perspectives and experience across Australia’s energy sector, including transmission, distribution, generation, storage, regulation and consumer energy resources.

Dr Jarra Hicks, a member of the current ISP Consumer Panel, says the panel brings an important long-term consumer lens to complex energy system decisions.

“The ISP is a fundamental part of planning the future of our energy system, and it is very important that energy consumers - people, communities, businesses - have an active say in that process. I have enjoyed being a part of that through the Consumer Advisory Panel,” Dr Hicks said.

The ISP Consumer Panel also provides an important bridge between technical system planning and community expectations.

Members are expected to participate constructively in collaborative, multistakeholder processes and provide high quality written and verbal advice.

“My experience with the Consumer Advisory Panel has taught me so much about the importance – and the complexities – of the shift to renewable energy. Working with the AEMO team on the ISP and its various inputs has been a stimulating and enjoyable challenge,” Dr Hicks said.

“The planning presented in the ISP has a tangible impact on how our future energy system is delivered and what it looks like. It has been very enriching and an honour to be part of the process of considering consumer needs and interests in this process,” she added.

Appointments to the 2028 ISP Consumer Panel are expected to involve a commitment of four to eight hours per week over the two-year ISP development period. Panel operations, including remuneration, are set out in the Terms of Reference.

Expressions of interest close at 5:00 pm (AEST), Friday 17 April 2026.

Applications should be emailed to [email protected] and include contact details, a response to the selection criteria, a current CV, two referees, and disclosure of any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest.

Further information about the ISP and previous Consumer Panels is available on AEMO’s website.
