DOE Notice of Coal Capability Self-Certification Filing
Summary
The Department of Energy (DOE) published a notice of filing for South Field Energy LLC's coal capability self-certification. This filing is required under the Powerplant and Industrial Fuel Use Act of 1978 for new baseload electric generating powerplants proposing to use natural gas or petroleum as their primary fuel source.
What changed
The Department of Energy (DOE) has published a notice regarding a coal capability self-certification filing submitted by South Field Energy LLC (SFE) on September 7, 2021. SFE, as the owner and operator of the South Field Energy Project, a new 1,182-megawatt baseload electric generating powerplant located in Wellsville, Ohio, certified its capability to use coal or another alternate fuel as required by Section 201(d) of the Powerplant and Industrial Fuel Use Act of 1978 (FUA). The facility is designed to primarily use natural gas and has an in-service date of September 2021.
This notice serves to inform the public of SFE's compliance with FUA requirements. While this is a notice of filing and not an enforcement action, regulated entities, particularly new power generation facilities intending to use non-coal primary fuels, should ensure their own self-certification filings are submitted correctly and in a timely manner to the DOE. Copies of the filing are available for public inspection upon request.
