What changed
The Department of Defense Office of Inspector General (DOD OIG) has substantiated allegations of whistleblower reprisal in an administrative investigation concerning Goldbelt Integrated Logistics Services, LLC (GBILS) at Crane, Indiana. The investigation, initiated by a complaint from a U.S. Government civilian employee, found that GBILS removed a contractor employee from a government contract after the contractor employee made protected disclosures during a separate U.S. Navy investigation against the civilian employee. Both the U.S. Government civilian employee and GBILS were found to have engaged in reprisal.
This finding indicates a direct violation of whistleblower protection laws and regulations. Compliance officers for government contractors and federal agencies should review their internal policies and procedures related to handling protected disclosures and contractor employee management. While specific penalties are not detailed in this summary, substantiated reprisal can lead to disciplinary actions, contract modifications, or other enforcement measures. Companies and individuals involved in government contracting should ensure robust mechanisms are in place to prevent and address any retaliatory actions against employees who report wrongdoing or participate in investigations.
What to do next
- Review internal policies on whistleblower protections and contractor employee management.
- Ensure mechanisms are in place to prevent and address retaliatory actions against employees making protected disclosures.
