What changed
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), led by National Commissioner/CEO Dr. Vincent Olatunji, met with the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, to discuss a partnership focused on boosting Nigeria's global competitiveness through data protection and privacy. The NDPC highlighted that robust data protection measures are crucial for improving credibility, attracting foreign direct investment, and aligning with the nation's 'Renewed Hope Agenda'. The Ministry expressed interest in collaborating with the NDPC to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, and to embed privacy practices within its sector and initiatives.
As a result of this partnership, the NDPC will offer free induction training and Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers to the Ministry's staff. This initiative underscores the importance of data privacy in the digital economy and aims to foster a culture of compliance among government agencies and businesses. While this is a notice of partnership and not a rule with immediate compliance deadlines, regulated entities should be aware of the NDPC's focus on promoting data protection as a driver of trade and investment.
