US International Mark Registration Fees Change
Summary
WIPO has announced a change in the individual fees for international trademark registrations designating the United States of America. Effective April 12, 2026, new fee amounts in Swiss francs will apply for applications, subsequent designations, and renewals. These changes are established by the Director General of WIPO in accordance with the Madrid Protocol.
What changed
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has issued Information Notice No. 21/2026, announcing an upcoming change to the individual fees associated with the designation of the United States of America under the Madrid Protocol. As of April 12, 2026, new fee amounts, denominated in Swiss francs, will be implemented for international applications, subsequent designations, and renewals where the US is designated. This change affects the cost of international trademark registration for entities seeking protection in the United States.
Companies and legal professionals involved in international trademark filings must be aware of these new fee structures. The revised amounts will be payable for designations received by the Office of origin, subsequent designations filed with the Office of the Contracting Party of the holder or WIPO's International Bureau, and renewals processed on or after April 12, 2026. Failure to remit the correct fees may result in the application or renewal being considered not to have been filed or processed, potentially leading to loss of rights.
What to do next
- Update fee schedules for international trademark applications designating the US.
- Ensure correct fee amounts are remitted for applications, subsequent designations, and renewals filed on or after April 12, 2026.
- Inform clients and internal stakeholders of the upcoming fee changes.
