What changed
The Fiscalía General de la Nación announced the detention and charging of two trans women named Almendra and La Madre in connection with a February 6 homicide that occurred in Cali, Valle del Cauca. The victims were attacked with a stabbing weapon in a vacant lot and robbed; one died and the other sustained injuries. The accused were apprehended on April 20 in the El Pondaje and Charco Azul neighborhoods. A fiscal filed charges of homicide, attempted homicide, and aggravated theft—each in aggravated form—against both individuals, who did not accept the charges. A judge subsequently ordered preventive detention in a correctional facility.
For affected parties, this case represents an ongoing criminal prosecution in Colombia's adversarial criminal justice system. The charges carry significant penalties under Colombian law, and the preventive detention order means the accused will remain in custody pending trial. The legal disclaimer notes that the accused remain presumed innocent under Article 29 of the Colombian Constitution and Article 7 of Law 906 of 2004 until a competent judicial authority resolves their situation.
