What changed
The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has issued an order discharging the co-receivers appointed to manage the law practice of Lynne Williams. The order follows a petition for discharge and a report from the co-receivers, Justin Bennett and Mara King. The co-receivers were tasked with obtaining client files, securing funds, and protecting client interests. They reported that most client files from 2007 and prior were shredded, with one remaining file to be securely retained and eventually destroyed. Docket No.: BAR-24-28
In re: Lynne Williams
Bar No.# 009267
ORDER FOR DISCHARGE OF RECEIVERSHIP PURSUANT TO M. BAR R. 32
Before the Court is a Petition for Discharge of the Receiver appointed by this Court to oversee the concluding of the law practice of Lynne Williams. After consideration of the Court's Order Appointing Co-Receiver, the Co-Receiver's Report of Services Rendered, and the Petition for Discharge, the Court finds:
- Upon motion of Mara King, Esq., Special Counsel to the Maine Board of Bar Overseers, the Court appointed Justin Bennett, Esq. and Mara King, Esq. as Co-Receivers of the law practice of Lynne Williams, Esq. for the purpose of obtaining possession of files belonging to Lynne Williams' clients, securing funds held in Lynne Williams' operating and trust accounts, obtaining Lynne Williams' trust account records, and protecting the interests of the clients and/or former clients of Lynne Williams.
- Justin Bennett, Esq., and Mara King, Esq. as Co-Receivers of the law practice of Lynne Williams have taken necessary and reasonable steps to fulfill their obligations as Co-Receivers of the law practice of Lynne Williams. Co-Receivers attempted to locate recent electronic and hard files belonging to Ms. Williams's clients, to no avail. Attorney Bennett was able to locate several boxes of client files from 2007 and before, which the
Co-Receivers jointly inventoried. Of the client files accessed and reviewed, only two held documents that may be determined to have intrinsic value. Co-Receiver Bennett sent one to the corporate client. The other file is in the care and custody of Co-Receiver King, who has attempted to reach the client for instructions to whom the file may be sent (or if it should be destroyed). All other clients (from 2007 and prior) were shredded.
- The Co-Receivers reviewed all Lynne Williams' client files that could be located. Co-Receivers have generated an inventory of the client files and furnished a copy of that inventory to the Board of Overseers of the Bar and the Court.
- Some disposition needs to be made of the remaining client file of Lynne Williams' former client. Co-Receiver King has agreed to arrange for secure retention and then secure destruction of this file, in accordance with M. R. Prof. Conduct 1.15 and the Maine Bar Rules.
- Lynne Williams did not have an IOLTA Account at the time that she was suspended and the Order Appointing Co-Receivers was executed.
- A final accounting of Lynn Williams' operating accounts was provided to the Board, as well as to the Court. The balance of Lynne Williams' Bar Harbor Banking & Trust Checking Account ending in 00673, is \$1,151.72 (one thousand one hundred fifty-one dollars and seventy-two cents). The full amount shall be distributed to the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection for purposes of partial reimbursement of the significant funds paid to client(s) due to misappropriation of client funds.
- Once Bar Harbor Banking & Trust prepares and sends the check to the Lawyer's Fund for Client Protection for the full amount (\$1,151.72) remaining in Ms. Williams' account ending in 0673, the
shall be closed.1
- Based on the above findings, Justin Bennett, Esq., and Mara King, Esq. Co-Receivers of the law practice of Lynne Williams, have taken all reasonable steps to discharge their obligations as Co-Receivers of the law practice of Lynne Williams.
THEREFORE it is hereby ORDERED:
- Co-Receiver King, Esq., shall arrange for the secure retention of the remaining hard file of Lynne Williams' law practice, and eventual secure destruction of the files in accordance with M. R. Prof. Conduct 1.15 and the Maine Bar Rules.
- The remaining funds in Lynne Williams Bar Harbor Banking & Trust operating account ending in 0673, in the amount of \$1,151.72 shall be paid to the Lawyer's Fund for Client Protection in partial reimbursement for payments made to Ms. Williams' clients due to misappropriation of client funds.
- Once the funds have been released and sent to the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection, Ms. Williams Bar Harbor Banking & Trust account ending in 0673 shall be immediately closed
- Lynne Williams shall immediately cease and desist the use of williamsassociates@icloud.com email address,
- Lynne Williams shall provide Co-Receivers the password and answers to any security questions related to the email address, williamsassociates@icloud.com immediately.
- Lynn Williams shall immediately create a new personal email account and immediately provide the new email account address to the Court and the Board of Overseers of the Bar.
1 Lawyers Fund for Client Protection Fund checks shall be mailed to LFCP c/o Board of Overseers of the Bar, P.O. Box 597, Augusta, ME 04332-0597.
- The actions of Attorneys Bennett and King as Co-Receiver of the law practice of Lynne Williams as taken or proposed in the August 7, 2025, Interim Report, and March 12, 2026, Final Report of the Co-Receivers and Petition for Discharge, are approved, inter alia, the disposition of the client files and disposition of operating account funds.
- Justin Bennett, Esq. and Mara King, Esq., are discharged as Co-Receivers of the law practice of Lynne Williams.
- The Court extends its gratitude to Attorney Justin Bennett for his considerable efforts in closing the law office of Lynne Williams.
