North Macedonia AML/CFT Measures Strengthened
Summary
The FATF has published a follow-up report on North Macedonia's measures against money laundering and terrorist financing. The report indicates that North Macedonia has made progress in strengthening its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) regime.
What changed
This document is a follow-up report from the FATF assessing North Macedonia's progress in implementing its action plan to strengthen its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) regime. The report indicates that North Macedonia has made significant progress in addressing the strategic deficiencies previously identified, particularly in areas related to beneficial ownership transparency and the confiscation of criminal proceeds.
While this is a guidance document outlining the FATF's assessment, regulated entities operating in or with North Macedonia should be aware of the strengthened AML/CFT framework. Compliance officers should review the specific recommendations and ensure their internal controls and reporting mechanisms align with the updated international standards to mitigate risks associated with money laundering and terrorist financing in the jurisdiction.
What to do next
- Review FATF's follow-up report on North Macedonia's AML/CFT measures.
- Assess current compliance programs for alignment with updated international standards.
- Ensure robust beneficial ownership transparency and asset confiscation procedures are in place if operating in or with North Macedonia.
